A highly collectible piece of George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead history, this is the original 1981 Dawn of the Dead board game published by SPI (Simulations Publications, Inc.).
Released in 1981, just a few years after Romero’s landmark 1978 film, the game places players inside the film’s shopping mall setting. One player controls the four human survivors as they attempt to secure the mall and eliminate the undead, while the opposing player commands the relentless zombie horde. Rules for solitaire play are also included.
The original packaging describes the contents as including a 17" x 22" map, 100 cardboard playing pieces, easy-to-learn rules, and various playing aids.
Scarce Original SPI Release
The original SPI edition has become increasingly difficult to find, and collector research on SPI games specifically identifies Dawn of the Dead as having a very high rarity factor on the secondary market. SPI itself ceased operations shortly after this game was released, in 1982, making its original titles finite survivors from a relatively short period in tabletop gaming history.
While used and opened examples occasionally surface, an original 1981 copy still sealed in its factory shrink wrap is considerably more desirable and much harder to encounter, particularly for collectors of vintage horror games and Romero memorabilia.
Condition: This example remains sealed in its original shrink wrap. The vintage shrink does show wrinkling, creasing, looseness/separation in areas, and other age-related imperfections, especially around the edges and spine, all of which can be seen in the provided photographs.
